Oh wow. It seems like quite the challenge. It’s so much money and time and effort for you… to put it into a program that you don’t love? It seems counterptoductive. I don’t envy you this choice.
Yeah, it’s… complicated. But basically illness in my second and third year of undergrad tanked my GPA, and several of the schools I want to go to have suggested I do a Masters at a lower ranked school, or redo a year or two of undergrad to raise my GPA. My partner’s dad is a long-term faculty member at one of these lower-ranked schools (not dissing the lower ranked schools! They still get you the piece of paper!!) and has connections to put me in touch with the relevant faculty for me. Won’t get me in, no nepotism, but… it feels like the choice is swallowing some topics I’m less keen on for a year or two, or going back to undergrad for a year or two. YAY choices 😛
